Thailand's Tourism Department forecast a 13% drop in Chinese tourists this month, which is still lower than in November, which plunged 30% and was the biggest monthly contraction for Chinese arrivals to Thailand.
During the very same meeting Tourism and Sports Minister Kobkarn Wattanawrangkul claims that during January 1st until January 20th (this year), Thailand welcomed 1.8 million international tourists, up 6% year-on-year.
Mrs Kobkarn also said that she will propose to extend visa incentives for at least another three months in a bid to lure more foreign tourists and drive the industry during the low season.

Stupid Official
The Chief of Thailand's Revenue Department has apologised for the misleading information he and his staff gave earlier.
They informed Thailand's citizens that personal income tax filers would get refunds the next day after filing - as long as they use PromptPay.
The information was wrong.
According to Revenue Department director-general Prasong Poontaneat it worked only with those who tied PromptPay to their Krungthai Bank.
He claims that refunds via PrompPay to all banks had been in place only on January 11th while Krungthai Bank's system had been ready since January 4th, 2017.
For 2017, the Revenue Department forecast personal income tax refunds of 23 billion Baht to 3.2 million taxpayers.
It's a fact that Thailand's officials very often are giving false, incomplete, imprudent or rash information to its citizens.

Immigration News
Important Notice
Since General Prayuth Chan-ocha and his Military Junta launched their Coup d'état on May 22nd, 2014, Thailand's Visa ground rules are constantly changing. More over, not every consulate can issue all the different Visas. Some smaller consulates even display notices to the effect that non-immigrant visas are unavailable.
Our advice: Before booking your holidays please contact the Embassy in your country to obtain information about Thailand's latest regulation(s) and check the Chonburi Immigration Website or the website of Thailand's Immigration Police.
Update (March 2016):
New Overstay Regulations
Thailand's new immigration policy will take effect on March 20th of this year.
Please click for details!
Busy Immigration
Pol Lt Gen Nathathorn Prousoontorn, chief of the Immigration Bureau, informed the media that between October 2015 and March 2016 Thailand's Immigration deported a total of 486'947 foreigners who overstayed their visas. Another 323'575 foreigners overstaying their visas still remain at large.
If the numbers mentioned above are correct, the Immigration Bureau deported about 2'700 people a day...
Congratulation!
Never trust a statistic that you have not manipulated yourself!
New 10-year Visa
Thailand's interim Government announced on November 22nd, 2016, that foreign residents over 50 will be able to apply for 10-year visas.
The new Visa would replace one-year renewable visas and come in two installments of five years each.
Applicants must either earn a monthly salary of at least 100'000 Baht or have more than 3 million Baht in their bank account, which cannot be withdrawn within the first year after receiving the visa.
Applicants also must also have a health insurance that covers hospital stays and provides at least US$10'000 in annual coverage.
Visa holders will still have to check in every 90 days with the Bureau of Immigration.
Up & Down
Thailand's Military Junta cuts the visa-on-arrival fee for tourists from Andorra, Bulgaria, Bhutan, China, Cyprus, Ethiopia, India, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Lithuania, the Maldives, Malta, Mauritius, Romania, San Marino, Saudi Arabia, Taiwan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan from today 2'000 Baht to 1'000 Baht.
The 1'000-Baht fee for visas sought at Thai embassies and consulates would be lifted.
The reduction is applicable from December 1st, 2016, to February 28th, 2017, only.
The change was announced less than two months after the visa fee was increased to 2'000 Baht on September 27th, 2016...
New Rules
Foreigners who enter Thailand without a visa via a land border crossing can now do so only twice per calendar year.
Those who seek to enter Thailand without a visa via a land border checkpoint for a third time in a calendar year may be denied entry and asked to apply for a regular visa first.
Entries through international airports are not affected by this new regulation.
While eligible foreigners who enter Thailand under the “visa exemption” scheme would previously get 30 days exclusively at international airports but only 15 days at border crossings, this rule has now been relaxed and all foreigners will receive 30-day entry stamps also at land border checkpoints.
The new rules went into effect on December 31st, 2016.

Pattaya-Hua Hin ferry starts January 1st
Royal Passenger Liner Company operats the Pattaya Hua Hin ferry service
According to Marine Department director-general Sorasak Saensombat the new Pattaya Hua Hin ferry service will be officially launched on January 12th, 2017, but Thai and foreign visitors would be able to travel on the ferry for free between January 1st and January 15th as a New Year's gift.
The ferry starts from Bali Hai Pier in Southern Pattaya to the fishing pier in Hua Hin.
The ferry has 286 economy class seats on the first deck, 44 business class seats on the upper deck and two VIP rooms.
The Royal Passenger Liner Company announced that the daily ferry will leave the fishing pier in Hua Hin at 08:30 for Bali Hai in Pattaya. The return trip to Hua Hin will depart Pattaya at 15:30. Because the 38-metre long ferries from China can travel at up to 27 knots, the 105km long trip will take no more than two hours.
After January 15th a normal economy class fare of 1'250 Baht will kick in.
Update (January 1st):
Warning: There seems to be a discrepancy between the departure times announced by the operator and the actual departure times! TiT (This is Thailand).
Update (January 5th):

Update (January 10th):
Or a Lot of Fuss about Nothing?
On December 9th Col Pobanan Luangphanuwat, deputy chief of Military Circle 14, announced that City Hall's Officials have to intensely control Pattay's transportation operators that have seized and utilised public areas and roads because they cause traffic congestion because of their behavior.
He also announced that all minibus have to change their color so that the officers will be able to easily inspect them.
Moreover, some drivers collect too expensive fare and/or are parking their car on prohibited area.
The Army also announced that Baht buses will now only be allowed to use one lane of the road, to ease traffic congestion and must only stop at designated areas.
Col Pobanan Luangphanuwat said that all public areas will be reclaimed and that he intends to make Pattaya useful for everyone and that everybody must respect his rules.
During a meeting on December 14th Col Pobanan Luangphanuwat said that the crackdown on public transport operators continues with motorbikes, taxi, vans and baht busses. He vowed that motorbikes, baht buses and other vehicles no longer be allowed to pick up customers wherever they want and must stop in designated areas. The Army announced a ban on Flat Rate Fares. All taxis have to use the built-in taxi meters.
New Regulation as of December 24th
  • Baht Bus will load passengers (and passengers will get off) only at designated places
  • no more Baht Bus chartering
  • Baht Bus queuing waiting for customers, like the one near school 8 on the way to Jomtien, no more allowed
  • 4 new lines, marked line 4, 5, 6 and 7, will replace the existing ones
New Regulation as of December 24th
But as you can spot easely from the picture above, organisation isn't a strong point in highly educated Thailand.
According to the picture Baht Busses do not run on Pattaya second Road and on Soi Buakaow. Moreover, Line 5 and 7 are using part of Pattaya Beach Road in both directions...
Because of all the shortcomings and the fact of the missing designation of Bus Stops the Army postponed the new regulation until February 2017...

December 29th: Baht Bus Line 5 on Pattaya Second Road
New Regulation as of December 24th
December 29th (at about 22:00): Soi Buakhaow almost empty, only Baht Busses signed as Line 6 cruise the Soi every few minutes in both directions

Bus Stops on Pattaya Beach Road got new colors, but Baht Bus Driver still ignore them
Update (January 14th):
Bus Stop on Second Road
During the second week of January City Hall colored Pattaya's Second Road too, but because the Military Junta postponed the new regulation until February 2017, most Baht Bus drivers ignore the new regulation. After February 1st they will present a lot of new arguments why they can't use the already hated Bus Stops...
On December 5th Mr. Yuthasak Supasorn, Governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) told the press, this has been an amazing year for tourism in Thailand as shown by the huge numbers of visitors. We have reached 30 million and the high season has only just kicked off. We know that more people will be coming to enjoy the cool weather and holiday festivities. Thailand has so much to offer the world.
He also said that in 2016, Thailand is projecting total international tourism revenue of 1.62 trillion Baht (USD 46 billion), representing a year-on-year increase of 11.68% over 2015. To boost tourism numbers, various initiatives have been put in place to encourage tourists to visit and spend. This includes the waiver of tourist visa fees for visitors from 19 countries from 1 December, 2016, to 28 February, 2017, and the price of visas issued on arrival will be halved. To encourage more domestic travel, a long New Year holiday of four days including 31 December, 2016, and 1 to 3 January, 2017, has been confirmed.
A few days later the Tourism Council of Thailand (TCT) claimed that the decline in Chinese tourist arrivals to Thailand is expected to continue at least until the first quarter of 2017 because of the recent crackdown on zero-dollar tours. The council expects Chinese tourist arrivals to fall by 20%, or 2.1 million in the first quarter of next year.
TCT president Ittirit Kinglek said Chinese tourists and travel agencies still have concerns about the situation following the serious crackdown on zero-dollar tour operations in Thailand in September.
The zero-dollar clampdown contributed to a 16.2% fall in Chinese tourist arrivals in October. It is projected the number of Chinese tourists in the fourth quarter of this year will be only 1.6 million, decreasing 12.2% year-on-year.
However, the total number of Chinese arrivals in 2016 will still grow 12.3% to 8.9 million people but missing the target of 10.1 million, Ittirit Kinglek said.

Empty shop at the Avenue (Central Pattaya)
Wherever you go, each shopping center, including the all new Centralmarina, CentralFestival, Royal Garden Plaza, Mike Shopping Mall as well as Mike Department Store, the Avenue on Second Road, the new Harbour Mall and Tukcom on South Pattaya Road, they all have empty spaces and unused shops.
Streets in Pattaya present the very same sad pictures with hunderts of empty shops, even on Walking Street, Pattaya Beach Road, the Souths Pattaya Road and the City's Second Road. Central Road alone has over two dozens unused salesrooms.
A few years ago Pattaya was a prosperous City with fully booked Hotel Rooms. It is history.

Apple's next-generation iPhone is expected to abandon its conventional aluminum back cover design and will adopt a new design using two reinforced glass panes and a metal frame made of stainless steel in the middle.
The cost of the steel forging process is 30-50% cheaper than Apple's current unibody CNC machine process, while quality control is also more stable, Foxconn, the manufacturer of Apple's iPhones claims.
