Less Expats than ever before
ThaiVisa writes in an interesting article that more and more western expats turn their backs on Thailand and leaving the country.
No wonder! Since General Prayuth Chan-ocha and his handpicked Military Junta took power, the cost of living has risen sharply and the quality of life has fallen decisively, in full contrast to Prayuth's Government publications.
Even the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) finally admitted in July 2018 that the number of Western tourists visiting the Land of Smiles has dropped.
Hong Kong still leads the list of the most expensive locations in Asia, but Bangkok jumped 15 places to #52 from last year's survey.
Thailand's Military Junta in Cambodia's Footsteps?
Last Sunday, July 29th, Cambodia elected a new government.
According to the nation's election authority, the previous ruler Hun Sen and his Cambodian People's Party (CPP) have made an outstanding victory.
However, Hun Sen, Cambodia's dictator since 1985, had all his possible opponents arrested before the vote, put them in prison and had their partiy banned. The remaining 19 political parties ran against Hun Sen's ruling CPP, but none are strongly critical of the government.
Thailand's Dictator General Prayuth Chan-ocha is now following the same, obviously successful, recipe.
A number of prominent opposition politicians are already in prison, for others, including the new whiz Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit (the founder of Thailand's Future Forward Party), arrest warrants have already been issued or charges are being prepared.
In his address to mark the 72th anniversary of the Bangkok Post, Thailand's Dictator General Prayuth Chan-ocha called himself the prime minister you can trust...
His supporters are already preparing a rule to allow the Dictator to head the Government for life.
In the meantime, his gigantic military expenditures and his mega-projects are allegedly squandering the country's entire state's assets - according to observers everything according to the wellknown motto the bigger the projects, the bigger the envelopes!
You remember, General Prayuth Chan-ocha's Military Junta has promised and postponed elections several times since its 2014 coup overthrew a civilian government.

Thai Teachers urged to control their finances
The salary of a Thai Teacher ranges anywhere between 15'000 and 70'000 Baht/month, e.g. the salary of an assistant teacher, the lowest level of the profession, is somewhere between 15'050 and 24'750 Baht which is actually higher than many professions.
Nevertheless, these people are in deep debt. It is estimated that each teacher may be up to three million Baht in debt.
The reason? In contrast to ordinary people, Teachers are not required to undergo credit checks with the National Credit Bureau before borrowing money. Even debt-stricken Teachers are continuing to buy various expensive consumer products on hire-purchase to gain respect and recognition.
How Teachers will educate Students to take care of the money if they spend too much themselves?

Free WiFi along Pattaya Beach
Free WiFi on Pattaya Beach
Pol Maj Gen Pinit Maneerat, the Military Junta's spokesman for Pattaya, announced that the city has invested 24 million Baht* to install a free WiFi system along Pattaya Beach for the general public and tourists.
It's the third time City Hall announces a Free WiFi service during the last 10 years or so.
The last two times TOT Public Company Limited, a Thai state-owned telecommunications company, was responsible for the (failed) service.
This time City Hall claims that they made a 1-year contract with state enterprise CAT Telecom Plc.
According to Pol Maj Gen Pinit Maneerat CAT installed 24 hotspots along Pattaya Beach, from Dusit Thani to the Bali Hai pier area.
To use the Free WiFi users have to register with their personal details. In return they will get two hours of free access per day.
For its Thai citizens Pattaya City Hall published an instruction to register (automatically?) - but not for the City's real breadwinner - the tourists.
*On November 26th, a spokesman from City Hall corrected the press release and said that the City has to pay 14 million Baht/year for the 24 hotspots.
Unusable!
Our Testrun on November 25th shows that - at least for tourists - the announced service is not usable.
Using a smartphone communicating in another language as Thai it is impossible to do the required registration.
When connecting to @Pattaya City Free WiFi the display immediately asks for the passwort.
Moreover, the signal strength is satisfying only in front of a hotspot, in between it's mediocre and the signal is characterised by strong fluctuations with a maximum throughput of 1 Mbps.
The whole announcement of @Pattaya Free Wifi doesn't make sense.
It's nothing else than a bad joke!
Obviously the Government tries everything that Thailand remains a laughing stock
Update (December 1st):
Pattaya Mail writes that Surfing has taken on a whole new meaning on Pattaya Beach after the city launched free wireless internet access.
But they didn't check if the service is reliable - or not...

Important Notice
Since General Prayuth Chan-ocha and his Military Junta launched their Coup d'état on May 22nd, 2014, Thailand's Visa ground rules are constantly changing. More over, not every consulate can issue all the different Visas. Some smaller consulates even display notices to the effect that non-immigrant visas are unavailable.

Rejuvenation in Pattaya
On Friday, July 13th, 2018, I spent almost whole my day in Bangkok and made a unexpected discovery.
To avoid the vultures of the Taxi and Tuk Tuk Mafia, I drove Bangkok's completely outdated, but still overcrowded buses - as I did 1988/89, when I spent over a year in Thailand's capital.
While at that time always someone stood up to offer me his place, this time all passengers remained seated and looked into their mobile phones.
For me, this is a clear proof that I have become younger rather than older in the last thirty years living in Pattaya.
Long live Pattaya, which apparently can not only stop the biological clock, but even turn it back!
Enlarged Pattaya Beach
Enlarged Pattaya Beach
Enlarged Pattaya Beach
Pattaya's much-delayed 430-million Baht Beach Restauration, known as Pattaya Beach Nourishment Project, is running badly behind schedule.
On April 23rd, 2018, Marine Department Director Ekaraj Kantaro promised that the beach restauration project will be completed by the end of August.
It won't be...
The project begun in 2011 after a warning by environmental experts that Pattaya's sandy shoreline could be wiped away within five years.
Rain and floods as well as missing maintenance and the completely unnecessary new Beach Promenade pushed by former Pattaya Mayor Itthiphol Khunplome has accelerated the erosion over the years.
To channel the water from the sometimes flooded Beach Road into the sea and to erode the sand even faster, our highly educated officials have built special wells in the Beach Promenade, introducing a new threat to pedestrians, joggers, runners and riders of bicycles and wheelchairs:

Pattaya Beach disaster continues
Reality vs Fiction
Thailand's highly educated Experts still believe that erosion is the cause for Pattaya's missing sand
Nothing can replace stupidity
The last rains have made it drastically visible to everyone: Not the much touted erosion is to blame for Pattaya's beach disaster, but Pattaya's missing sewerage system.
But our 'highly skilled' experts from Pattaya Burapha University and the Research Institute of Aquatic Resources at Chulalongkorn University, as well as our officials from Pattaya City Hall still blame the erosion of the sea for wasting taxpayers' money.

Thailand bans Trans Fats!
Thailand bans Trans Fats!
On July 16th Thailand's Food and Drug Administration announced that the country would be free of trans-fat foods after a ban takes effect on January 9th, 2019.
A notification published in the Royal Gazette bans the production, imports and sale of partially hydrogenated oils, as well as food containing them.
But on July 22nd, FDA Food Bureau chief Supattra Boonserm dismissed suggestions that the ban would cover all types of trans fats.
The ban does not cover natural trans fats, she said, explaining that industrial trans fats were found in partially hydrogenated oils (PHOs). The process involves adding hydrogen to vegetable oils to turn them into solid fats, Supattra said.
For additional information please read:
Question:
Why the Thai Government bans Trans Fats and not Alcohol, Cigarettes, Sugar, Pla Ra as well as the stinky China Tourist buses and all the other cars powered by Diesel engines?
They are a lot more dangerous to the health of the Thai population than trans fats.
Answer:
According to Thailand's Food and Drug Administration (FDA), trans fats can easily be replaced by Palm Oil - and Palm Oil is produced in Thailand.
However, the agency is hiding the fact that the use of Palm Oil is controversial:
A study recently published by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) shows alarming results: Palm oil in food can be carcinogenic and can alter the genetic material!
Thailand bans Trans Fats!
Thai food doesn’t contain any trans fat unless the condiments or sauces contain it, which is usually not the case with traditional Thai food

Main Entrance to Pattaya's famous Walking Street!
Since many decades, this bottleneck is South Road's main entrance to Pattaya's World Class Walking Street.
Thousands of Tourists have to use this obstacle every single day on their way to the city's most prestigious street.

Is Pattaya City Hall wasting 14 million Baht?
Obviously Pattaya City Hall is wasting 14 million Baht
On November 22nd, 2017, Pol Maj Gen Pinit Maneerat, the Military Junta's spokesman for Pattaya, announced that City Hall has installed a free WiFi system along Pattaya Beach for the general public and tourists.
Pattaya City Hall even published an instruction to register in Thai on its website.
Nevertheless, until today it's impossible to access the internet through @Pattaya City Free WiFi.
The 14 million Baht allegedly paid to state enterprise CAT Telecom Plc. for the 24 hotspots is a complete waste of Taxpayer's Money.
Update (March 31st, 2018): Pattaya City Free WiFi still does not work!
Update (April 4th, 2018): It is just another proof that most municipal Wi-Fi efforts end in disaster.

Dirty and stinky Tap Water in Pattaya
We don't care!
Stinking Tap Water in some parts of Pattaya
Since April 14th Pattaya's highly professional Provincial Waterworks Authority (PWA) delivers dirty tap water to houses, residences and hotels in some parts of this World Class City.
The water smells like fecal matter, but obviously nobody cares.
A Chemist told us:
Do not use Pattaya's water to clean your teeth.
Be careful and use Drinking Water when cleaning wounds and/or genitals.
Nevertheless, Pattaya's tap water is still less contaminated than the sea in front of this World Class Beach Resort...

Roaches populate Pattaya Beaches
During the last few months cockroaches have joined the rats on Pattaya's World Class Beaches.
As usual, our lovely Officials blame the tourists to cause the plague:
On July 13th, Kanrapa Mukdasanit of the Disease Control Department blamed the city's tourists as well as its locals for the insect scourge. They do not dispose their food, trash and other waste correctly, the 'well educated' Official claimed.
Obviously he never visited the beaches:
The cockroaches are nesting and swarming around Pattaya's putrid beach outflow pipes. Pattaya City Hall has to be blamed for the cockroache invasion, not the city's tourists. City Hall itself spilles the unthreated sewage into the sea.

Emergency Room
Midnight Pattaya
During 2016 an Egicogroup announced a prestigious project on our old fashioned Walking Street.
To the left and to the right of the entrance to Soi BJ the company claimed it will built two modern glass palaces with Coyote Clubs, Bars, Night Clubs and a Hotel with a large parking space.
Midnight Pattaya also claimed that the first venues will open during 2016 and 2017.
Most of the buildings are still empty and an eyesore on Walking Street.
Soho Square on the block
A large LED display at the entrance to the still ailing Soho Square tells that the Soho Square Complex is on the block.
CoCoon still closed
CoCoon at the entrance to Soho Square opened on December 23rd, 2017, as a we do it all nightclub, a concept that usually doesn't work in Pattaya.
Therefore it was no surprise when the club closed down on April 31st, 2018.
Since then large banners claim Closed for Renovation, but nobody in the neighbourhood could spot some working people in the building during the last few months.
Should a patient survives our emergency room, you will read it here.
