Warning:
Resistant Malaria Virus hits Thailand
Scientists warn that strains of malaria resistant to two key anti-malarial medicines are becoming more dominant in Vietnam, Laos and northeastern Thailand.
The Scientists discovered that the strain had spread aggressively, replacing local malaria parasites.
Malaria is caused by Plasmodium parasites which are carried by mosquitoes and spread through their blood-sucking bites.
According to World Health Organization (WHO) almost 220 million people were infected with malaria in 2017.

Former Mayor of Pattaya, Ittipol Khunpluem, takes over the Office of Minister of Culture in the new Thai government, which is still headed by the Country's Dictator General Prayuth Chan-ocha.
On August 25th, 2017, Pattaya Mail reported that the Military Junta's very own Pattaya City Council called many of the projects initiated by Pattaya's former Mayor Itthiphol Khunplome (or Kunplome or Khunpleum) wasteful...

Organized crime outpaces authorities
Thanks to rampant corruption, weak law enforcement and lax border controls, organized crime outpaces authorities in Southeast Asia, a report from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) says.
Transnational crime syndicates generate profit of tens of billions of dollars each year from a rising trade in drugs, counterfeit goods and medicines, people-smuggling, and trafficking of wildlife and timber.

Fake Numbers?
Thailand’s tourism industry in stormy weather?
According to the Entertainment & Tourism Association of Pattaya City the number of travellers in Pattaya during this low season has fallen by 20-30% from the same period last year as has the number of Chinese tourists. The association blames the strong Baht for the decline.
The Thai Hotel Association claims that tourism in Phuket is going down the pan. They blame a sluggish world economy.
Official figures from the Ministry of Tourism and Sport shows a slight rise year on year for all tourist arrivals from January to June - up 0.7%. Anccording Thailand's Ministry of Tourism and Sport even revenue from the tourists is up by 0.3% to 1.01 million million Baht. But the Thai Airports Department reports that at its 28 airports the traffic dropped by 1%...
To help the big hotel chains increase their room occupacy, Thailand's Dictator has declared war on the so-called illegal hotels. He ignores the worldwide trend towards smaller, more personal hotels. Obviously, in the eyes of the dictator, only large hotel chains can offer security to the guest. In Pattaya almost 90% are so-called illegal hotels and the number is likely to be valid for the rest of the country.
If Thailand's Dictator prevails, you will have to pay significantly higher prices for the rooms, but with the same lousy service!
In our opinion, the above-mentioned arguments for a decrease in the number of tourists are all wrong
Ordinary tourists choose their holiday destination with the help of catalogues, travel reports from friends and the Internet, they do not compare the exchange rates of the individual countries, only expats may do this.
Also the argument of the sluggish economy is wrong. According to unanimous reports, international tourism is breaking all records this year.
The problem is homemade:
The land of smiles became the land of greed and the open hand.
Reports about dishonest taxi and tuk-tuk drivers make a stay in Thailand anything but desirable and the constantly changing regulations of the immigration authorities as well as the horrible traffic and the dirty air and beaches do the rest to keep tourists away from Thailand.
Moreover, tourists worldwide loathe Thailand's officially-arranged and promoted dual-price system. It shows to everybody that Thailand's Government is looking at tourists as cash cows only.

The Myth of Thailand's Healthy Cuisine
Be aware of contaminated Vegetables
The myth of Thailand's healthy cuisine has once again been dampened by the publication of new research results on Thai vegetables and fruits.
The Thailand Pesticide Alert Network (Thai-PAN) recently published the results of a test of 286 samples of vegetables they colletcted with the help of Thailand's Food and Drug Administration (FDA), provincial health officials, Tambon health workers, members of national farmer council, consumers’ association and civil society.
Food samples were collected from fresh markets and departement stores in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Khon Kaen, Yasothorn, Srakaew, Chanthaburi, Ratchaburi and Songkhla and included 15 types of vegetables and nine types of fruit commonly consumed by the public.
The analysis were made by ISO-17025 certified laboratories in the United Kingdom.
The result is shocking as they found that 41% of the samples were contaminated with chemical pesticides, Ms. Prokchol Ousap, the coordinator from Thai-PAN, said and added that fresh fruit and vegetables on the shelves of large department stores were more contaminated than those sold in local fresh markets.
The laboratories also found that products that are labeled as meeting GAP and GMP standards are safer as 'only' 26% were found to be contaminated.
In other words:
A BIO label does not guarantee a BIO product.

Waterfront in a new edition?
Announcement of the new Bali Hai Landmark
Since a few month we are waiting for the announced opening of a sales office at Royal Garden Plaza from a company called One Global Corporation (OGC). The entrepreneur(s) claim to built an iconic Landmark on Bali Hai Bay and promise a new perspective of life.
the announcement reminded us of another, now abandoned building on Bali Hai, the Waterfront eyesore.
The Waterfront eyesore
The Waterfront project was first launched in 2004. But because it was to close to the sea, the construction had to wait until Itthiphol Kunplome (the then Mayor) and his Pattaya City Hall approved the construction of a new marina built on reclaimed land.
On July 16th, 2014, the construction on The Waterfront Suites and Residence was ordered to stop after saftey inspectors discovered that the building varied from approved construction designs.
Then Mayor Itthiphol repeatedly stated that the project has continually followed correct and fully transparent legal processes and he urged anyone to investigate the various hearings and reports themselves.
It took Bali Hai Marina to build the Waterfront eysore
On January 16th, 2017, the Isreali owned company filed a petition with the Central Bankruptcy Court in Bangkok for debt restructuring of more than 2.39 billion Baht.
The restructure plan didn't work. A few months later, the company had gone bankrupt...
Now Pattaya has to live with an unfinished marina and an abandoned building.
A double stain of shame.

The Comeback of the Monorail
Hardly in office, Sontaya Khunpleum, the acting Mayor of Pattaya, presented Pattaya's Citizens the remake of an old plan of his younger brother Ittipol Khunpluem, a former Mayor of Pattaya - the Monorail.
During his tenure, Ittipol Khunpluem already wasted millions of Baht on feasibility studies - until Bangkok's Designated Areas for Sustainable Tourism Administration (Dasta) told Itthiphol Khunpluem in 2011 Pattaya's repositioning as a tourist destination has to go ahead without Itthiphol Kunplome's dream toy, his Monorail.
But he - or his family - never gave up the project: In an Interview with Bangkok Post on March 22nd, 2015, Ittipol said that the project's blueprint has been completed. But construction will not kick off until the government approves the high-speed train linking Suvarnabhumi Airport to Pattaya. The monorail project will be worth the investment when it can link with the high-speed train. The project is in the city's development plan to solve traffic congestion in Pattaya in the long-term, perhaps within the next six years.
On June 16th, 2016, Thailand's Military Junta replaced Ittipol Khunpluem by an appointed committee of twelve members, with Mr. Chanatpong Sriviset as acting Mayor.
On August 25th, 2017, Pattaya Mail reported that the Military Junta's very own Pattaya City Council called many of the projects initiated by Pattaya's former Mayor Itthiphol Khunplome (or Kunplome or Khunpleum) wasteful.
On September 16th, 2016, Itthiphol's successors at Pattaya City Hall proposed an eight-kilometer-long downtown tram system and on June 10th, 2017 a watchdog group claimed on Facebook that two tram lines are coming for sure and are set to transform Pattaya into a real World Class Resort.
Thank God the project was never realized, but once again a lot of money was wasted for nothing.
The new Monorail project, launched by Sontaya's Administration claims to reduce pollution as well as traffic problems and that Tourists arriving by train would be whisked to their destination on the new system.
That's a lie: The monorail does not serve the many and scattered hotels in Naklua, Pattaya and Jomtien. Arriving tourists can't reach their destination by the Monorail.
According to Pattaya City Hall, two separate companies are already developing plans and putting forward proposals that are expected to be completed by July 2019.
Obviously just another waste of taxpayers' money.

On June 24th, in the afternoon, 30 local officials and police arrived at the Euro Star Jomtien Beach Hotel, on Jomtien Beach Road to shut down power, remove security systems, blocked the entrance with metal poles and drove dozens of tourists out of their rooms and restaurants without prior warnings.
Not a word was said as to whether the displaced foreigners would be entitled to a refund.
Euro Star is (or better was) a popular 3-Star Hotel with 66 rooms about 50 Meters only from Jomtien Beach..
The incident stems from a property dispute between the Hotel Owner and his Creditor.

On Jomtien Beach Road, the Surfbeach Hotel opened a Café Amazon.
